One team done ...

We took one team out today. Had planned to run both teams but time didn't allow for it tonight. The temps were around +6F with some snow falling all day. With about an inch of new snow on the trails, we decided it would be safest to run the big 11 dog team with the 4 wheeler rather than the sled! We only took them 5 miles again tonight, but it's better than nothing!

The team:
Kia & Muktuk
Baleen
Tanner & Shasta
Dude & Kivek
Gateway & Shelby
Shammu & Jasper

After the 4 wheeler almost not starting at the get go, we finally got underway!! The leaders are awesome! They tried to go straight down the old "out" trail, but came over "gee" when asked and off we went. Got out to the turn around and they did it all by themselves!! All in all, it was a good run. Tomorrow is the other team before the brisket dinner!!

Training Run #2

It has been in the teens or 20's this weekend with snow falling off and on. Yesterday, I dragged the trails to try to get some of the snow we have into the holes and ruts in the trail. Didn't seem to do much good, but any little bit helps! The run today was 4 miles for each team using the 4 wheeler for control (safety). It was still snowing while we were running. The temps held in the +20's. The trails were really soft and the new snow on them created a great environment for the mackenzies to get lots of snowballs in their feet! Gonna have to get the booties out and start that wrestling match when the trails are like this!

So, team one today was:

Kia &Muktuk
Baleen & Bolio
Tanner & Stubby
Hannah & Jasper
Gateway
Shammu & Shelby

This team looked really good. Kia is an awesome little leader (too bad she isn't going to be living with us much longer). Baleen was distracted by squirrels chattering at her! Thankfully, she wasn't in lead to take the team off on a tangent into the trees! Everyone else looked good and were pleasantly tired after the nice, easy 4 miles.

And, team two was:

Cheyanne & Sioux
Patton & Panzer
Shasta & Fred
Kivek & Dude
Kako & Zena
Sherman & Butternut

This is a team of mostly veteran dogs that know what is happening and wanted to GO! They looked GREAT going out. The girls in lead were doing awesome. About a mile and a half into the run Kako & Zena were balking and pulling the WRONG way!! We figured out that they were both getting snowballs in their feet so bad that they were having a hard time running! So, we stopped a few times on the way out to clear their feet of snowballs. The girls in lead executed the turn around without hesitation. We stopped for a break and cleared feet again. About a 1/4 mile from the turn off the main trail, we came head on with a couple out for a ride on their snowmobile. They pulled off the trail and stopped the engine. The excellent leaders said NO WAY we are not happy about that thing! And since they hesitated, Patton (in swing) decided it was a GREAT time to give the gal on the snowmobile a HUG!! He jumped right up on her and gave her kisses and a hug! What a sweet boy we have raised!! :o) I got the team moving again only by pulling with all my might to get them to go by the stopped and shut off sno-go! After we got the team by them, I cleared the tangles and cleaned the girls feet again and then we were off and running again! After that though, the whole team just lost steam and seemed to slow way down. We made it home and they were definately tired and ready to take a break in their pens.

We are inside now and resting for a bit ourselves before heading out to clean pens and feed them. We are hoping to run another 4 miles with each team at some point this week and then maybe get them out to 6 mile runs next weekend!

Really hoping Mother Nature will bless us with some decent amounts of snow over the next few days so we can get the sleds out!!

Happy Trails!

First training run 2010

The temp was around +35F with bright, sunny skies. Took out two teams with the 4-wheeler.

Team 1:
Muktuk & Baleen in lead
Bolio & Stubby in swing
Tanner in team
Shelby in team
Jasper & Hannah in team
Shammu & Gateway in wheel

Team 2:
Cheyanne & Sioux in lead
Patton & Panzer in swing
Shasta & Fred in team
Kivek & Dude in team
Kako & Zena in team
Sherman & Butternut in wheel

The teams each went about 3 miles tonight just to see how everyone is running. We have alot of 10 year old dogs that we didn't want to push out 4 or 6 miles on the first run. Tom had gone out yesterday and scouted out a new trail to get around the 40 acres behind us so we are not going right across the neighbors property. The cool thing is that the guy that owned this 40 acres prior to the guy that owns it now had cleared the full property line with a dozer and the trail is alot smoother than the usual trailer were using! It adds about a 1/2 mile or so to the run, but that won't hurt any of them! Just need to get a feeder trail in so we are not trying to take a 90 degree turn within the first 100 yards of taking off!

We kinda started this run out in the hole! We were letting dogs out of pens to hook them up and get harnesses on and Kia came out of her pen, ran down to the door to stick her head out and then turned around and was screaming and limping!! She appeared to twist something and just wasn't right. She was put back in her pen and left home for this run. Will have to figure out if we need to take her to the vet! Anyway, we got the first team harnessed and hooked up. Take off was pretty smooth. Tom had to get off and call the leaders down the new trail, but once we were around that corner we were off and running! It was a really nice trail! The first corner kinda threw Baleen for a loop. But, again Tom got off and showed them the way! Had to do that again at the next corner because Baleen & Tuk were going to create their own trail! From there is was pretty smooth sailing as they were on familiar trails. Everyone looked pretty good and were just glad to be out running again!

After the first team was home again and unharnessed, we got the second team dressed and as we were hooking them up the first 8 hooked to the line tried to take off with the four wheeler with out either of us on it! They were pulling the wheeler down the trail with it in gear and the brake locked as tight as it could be!! Tom held the team while I brought out the last 4 dogs! Then we were off. After showing the girls where the first turn was and that they were really suppose to go that way (they thought Tom was crazy because the trail we always use is right in front of them!!) we were off and running. They took all of the other turns up to the turn around without any help from Tom! It was a pretty smooth run all in all for this team!

Really need to remember to bring the camera with me! Will try to get pictures next time.

Happy Trails!
